Trial and error approach of the «SMASH» system for ground and air targets

Armasuisse

Bern, 17.05.2024 - A technology demonstration of fire-control systems for hand-held weapons took place in Walenstadt (SG) from 15 to 17 May 2024. The trial and error approach was carried out by the Federal Office for Defence Procurement armasuisse together with the Swiss Armed Forces. The aim was to demonstrate the capability of the «SMASH» system to effectively combat ground targets and minidrones.

A trial and error approach with a fire-control system of the «SMASH» range for the technology demonstration took place in Walenstadt (SG) from 15 to 17 May. This is an aiming device for hand-held weapons, such as an assault rifle, which aims to combat static and above all moving targets with a higher initial hit probability.

The trial and error approach performed aims to enable a qualitative estimate of the performance of the technologies integrated in the fire-control system. The system was tested in two situations, each with diverse levels of difficulty. The first focused on the kill probability with static and moving ground targets. The second situation examined firing at air targets, specifically at minidrones.

The trial and error approach was held in the military training area Walenstadt (SG) in the combat training centre OST. The trials were carried out effectively, thanks to the support of Training and Education Command and the Swiss Drone and Robotics Centre Defence of the Swiss Armed Forces.

Outlook

The trial and error approach was held for the Swiss Armed Forces, Swiss security authorities and the partners of the DACH countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland). In a further step, experts from armasuisse Science and Technology will evaluate the data in more detail. The results aim to demonstrate the capability of the SMASH system to the Armed Forces and their partners, as well as serve as a basis for a development in capabilities.

armasuisse Science and Technology (S+T) is the technological centre of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport DDPS. As such, it ensures scientific and technical competences for the Armed Forces and the DDPS as well as for the security organisations outside the DDPS. It also tests and assesses the operational readiness, the functionality and effective capability, as well as the security requirements of current and future systems in the defence and security area.
