SBS grad is ready for success at the next level

[Link]When Jordan Easterling decided she wanted to go to medical school, she knew she needed excellent health and science training to help her get there.

She found the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences at The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth's School of Biomedical Sciences, a program that provided the flexibility she needed to continue working full time while giving her the knowledge and skills to be a successful medical professional.

"This program allowed me to continue working as a lead medical assistant for a dermatology practice, while also being a full-time student despite living four hours away from the campus," Easterling said.

Easterling, who graduated this month, adds that the program's challenging curriculum and outstanding faculty support have prepared her for the next steps in her career.

"I would wholeheartedly recommend this Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences program to any student who aspires to attend professional school, such as medical school or dental school. It has transformed my study habits, given me confidence in my academic and professional capabilities, and taught me important skills that will undoubtedly help me succeed in medical school."

What inspired you to pursue your degree at HSC?

Once I decided to fully pursue medical school, I knew that I needed to get a second degree as my first degree would not support my academic goals. While looking at schools, I was hesitant to move far away and leave my job that provides invaluable clinical experience, so I knew that an online program was the best choice for me.

Once I discovered the online bachelor's program at HSC, I looked more into the institution as a whole and was immediately impressed by HSC's reputation, curriculum and mission. This program has allowed me to continue working as a lead medical assistant for a dermatology practice, while also being a full-time student despite living four hours away from the campus.

Who had an impact on your success at HSC?

Dr. Marcel Kerr (associate dean of academic affairs at HSC's School of Biomedical Sciences and Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences program director) had a major impact on my success at HSC. During my very first semester, I took a course called Analysis of Scientific Literature, which was taught by Dr. Kerr. Not only did it provide a very important foundation for future courses, but it was the first opportunity to have Dr. Kerr as a professor. Since then, I have been lucky enough to take more of her courses, including epidemiology and psychology, as well as biomedical statistics.

Dr. Kerr is one of those professors who truly cares about students' success. Even when the course content is challenging (let's face it, most of the time!) she does a great job of connecting with students and making difficult concepts easy to understand.

I can confidently say that without Dr. Kerr as a professor, I would not have been as successful in this program.

What advice do you have for current or future HSC students?

You have to give 110% to succeed in this program. I would wholeheartedly recommend this Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences program to any student who aspires to attend professional school, such as medical school or dental school. However, it is not easy; especially given the accelerated nature of every course. Staying consistent and motivated is key to success in this program.

Despite the challenges, not only has this program allowed me to showcase my academic talents, but it has also prepared me to be a successful health care professional. It has transformed my study habits, given me confidence in my academic and professional capabilities, and taught me important skills that will undoubtedly help me succeed in medical school.

What are your plans for the future?

I will be applying to medical schools this upcoming cycle for entry year 2025.
