Cardin Calls on Higher Education Officials to Curb Antisemitic and Violent On-Campus Activity

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement in response to violent protests happening on a number of major college campuses. Senator Cardin is a cosponsor of the Antisemitism Awareness Act, which would require the U.S. Department of Education to consider the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism when enforcing federal anti-discrimination laws.

"Every student has the right to expect their campus to be a safe space for learning and educational activity. Ongoing calls for violence, harassment and intimidation targeted at Jewish students are unacceptable and fall far outside of the constitutional right to peaceful protest. The leadership of our colleges and universities have a moral and legal responsibility to prevent such dangerous behavior."
