Congressman Krishnamoorthi Calls On USPS Board of Governors Chairman Bloom To Launch Proceedings To Fire Postmaster General DeJoy

SCHAUMBURG, IL - Yesterday, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi sent a letter to U.S Postal Service (USPS) Board of Governors Chairman Ron Bloom requesting that he support firing Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. This process must be done by a majority vote of the USPS Board of Governors.

"As the Chairman of the United States Postal Service (USPS) Board of Governors, it is your duty to uphold the mission enshrined in the Postal Service Reorganization Act of 1970: '[T]to bind the Nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people,'" Congressman Krishnamoorthi wrote. "Following a field hearing of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform in Chicago, at which USPS employees testified to the recent deterioration of this decades-old institution, I am compelled to express my solemn belief that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy must be immediately removed through a majority vote by the Board of Governors. It is no longer in the best interests of the USPS or its customers - the American people - for Mr. DeJoy to continue in his role."

During a recent Oversight Committee hearing and in his letter to USPS Board of Governors Chairman Bloom, Congressman Krishnamoorthi noted the dramatic 2020 USPS mail delays - a result of rushed, untested operational changes implemented by Postmaster General DeJoy - as evidence of Mr. DeJoy's inability to fulfill the duties of his current role. Similarly, Mr. DeJoy's recent October 1st service standard changes, which extend the delivery time for approximately 30% of first-class mail, were not implemented alongside proper evidence or justification. Mail delays can have grave impacts on the elderly waiting on medications or small business owners conducting their operations, among other customers reliant on USPS. The result will be a reckless downfall of the reliability of the historical institution due to poor leadership at the top.

"Throughout its history, the USPS has been an essential public service, representing the very best of American excellence and patriotism. But, I fear that reputation is in grave jeopardy," Congressman Krishnamoorthi wrote.

In Congressman Krishnamoorthi's letter to USPS Board of Governors Chairman Bloom, he requested that Mr. Bloom vote on the USPS Board of Governors to fire Postmaster General DeJoy. Congressman Krishnamoorthi asked for a response to this request by October 31st 2021.
