New Virtual Surgery School will help patients better prepare for surgery

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Royal Melbourne Hospital, Werribee Mercy Hospital, Western Health and the Women's have collaborated to create and launch an innovative series of 22 educational videos that will help educate patients on how to better prepare for their surgery.

The videos, which have just launched, cover evidence-based advice on general, condition-specific and same-day surgery, and are being made available in Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Greek. The resources are now being sought after by other health services across the State.

The videos are part of an initiative to implement Enhanced Recovery After Surgery plus Prehabilitation (ERAS+) at the five hospitals through the West Metro Health Service Partnership and feature clinicians from across the health services delivering advice and education to prepare patients for surgery.

Topics include what to expect with your surgery, advice and support on what patients can do to prepare, and information on physical, emotional, nutritional and general health.

Patients can access the Virtual Surgery School on a web browser or app on their phone with the help of their clinical team. The digital platform has been developed to host the videos and enable health services to also collect information on patient experience and outcomes to help improve patient care.
