Sanders Calls a Special Election in Benton County to Fill the Vacancy for the Democrat Nominee for Justice of the Peace, District 4

TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS COME - GREETINGS:

A PROCLAMATION CALLING FOR A CONVENTION TO FILL THE VACANCY IN NOMINATION FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY NOMINEE FOR THE BENTON COUNTY OFFICE OF JUSTICE OF THE PEACE, DISTRICT 4.

WHEREAS: On March 15, 2024, the Benton County Election Commission certified the results of the March 5, 2024, primary election for, among other things, the Democratic Party nominee for the Benton County office of the Justice of the Peace, District 4;

WHEREAS: The Benton County Election Commission certified that the Democratic Nominee was unopposed at the primary election;

WHEREAS: The Democratic Nominee for the Benton County office of the Justice of the Peace, District 4, has formally withdrawn from the race, creating a vacancy in nomination for that office; and

WHEREAS: The Democratic Party of Arkansas timely notified me of the vacancy in nomination for the Democratic Party nominee for the Benton County office of the Justice of the Peace, District 4, and indicated that the Party chooses to fill the vacancy in nomination by convention.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS, acting under the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Arkansas, do hereby proclaim as follows:

1. A special convention of delegates of the appropriate county shall be held no later than Monday, June 10, 2024, for the purpose of filling the vacancy in nomination for the Democratic Party nominee for the Benton County office of the Justice of the Peace, District 4.

2. The period for filing for candidacy as a party candidate with the County Party for the special convention shall commence on Monday, June 3, 2024. The deadline for filing as a party candidate shall be at the convention on Monday, June 10, 2024.

3. Upon approval of a convention by the Benton County Democratic Party Committee for the nominee of the Democratic Party of Arkansas shall provide a certificate of nomination to the Benton County Clerk, and to the Benton County Election Commission, no later than June 14, 2024.

4. All of the deadlines and requirements shall be as provided for by the applicable election laws of this State.
