Salford’s local election 2024 results have been announced.
The political makeup of the council has changed and is now:
- Labour 50 seats
- Conservative 7 seats
- Liberal Democrats 2 seats
- Independent 1 seat
One seat was up for election in each of the twenty wards in the city, and due to a councillor standing down in the Ordsall ward there were 21 seats up for election in total.
The turnout for the election was 26.66% per cent with 51,382 votes cast.
The polls closed at 10pm on Thursday 2 May and the verification for Salford's three elections took place at the Salford Community Stadium overnight into the early hours of Friday. The count for Salford City Mayor and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Mayor took place yesterday on Saturday 4 May with the local count taking place today.
Returning Officer Tom Stannard made the announcements in each ward which was also livestreamed for people watching at home. The final ward was announced at approximately 12.15pm.
Tom said: "I would like to thank our residents for voting in these elections and having their say on who they wanted to represent them in their area. I'd also congratulate the councillors who have been selected to represent their residents.
"These elections would not be possible without the support of all the staff at poll stations across the city, and everyone involved in implementing the still new photo ID requirement and the people who have helped to verify the votes and count them, and my personal thanks go to all of them for their hard work and support."
Salford City Council comprises 20 electoral wards with three councillors representing each ward. It remains controlled by the Labour party. Councillors are elected to represent their local area and residents and contribute to the development of local policies in areas such as social care, housing, planning, highways, and education.
