News Release -- Animal Services to Host “Total Eclipse of the Heart” Free Dog Adoption Event Saturday

City of Rochester

News Release

(Thursday, March 28, 2024) - Rochester Animal Services will host a Total Eclipse of the Heart free dog adoption event from noon to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Verona Street Animal Shelter outdoor play yard in Brown Square Park, 251 Verona Street.

Anyone who adopts a dog during this event will also receive a free set of eclipse glasses and other gifts to celebrate the total solar eclipse that will pass over Rochester on April 8.

"Witnessing a total solar eclipse is the kind of experience that becomes a lifetime memory, so we want to give our families an opportunity to enhance their own special memories of this event by welcoming a new source of love and joy into their homes," said Dr. Shirley Green, Commissioner of the Department of Recreation and Human Services. "I want to thank our partners are Petco Love for supporting pet adoptions at Rochester Animal Services."

The Total Eclipse of the Heart event will give those who are interested in adopting a dog an opportunity to meet, pet and play with eight friendly and loving dogs that are available for free adoption. The City's Rec on the Move mobile R-Center will also be on site to add to the fun with engaging activities for youth and families.

Those interested in adopting a dog should bring a collar and leash to transport their new pet home safely.

Petco Love, a non-profit animal welfare organization, is supporting the event though its Petco Love Adopt Program. Since 1999, Petco Love has sponsored more than 6.8 million pet adoptions across the country.
