Closing Date for Virginia Beach Housing Needs Survey Extended Through April 5

The Department of Housing & Neighborhood Preservation is still collecting public input on housing needs in Virginia Beach for the City's housing study and has extended its online survey at www.SpeakUpVB.com until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5.

The department is collaborating with the Virginia Center for Housing Research (VCHR) at Virginia Tech to conduct an analysis of the current housing market and identify strategies to address housing needs in Virginia Beach. In November 2022, the City Council approved an ordinance to fund an updated housing study and report, which was previously completed in 2016.

The public input opportunity for the housing study kicked off with eight meetings between January and February where attendees participated in small group discussions to share thoughts on:

  • Housing-related challenges they have experienced or observed
  • Resources that would address these issues
  • What "affordable housing" means to them

For those who were unable to attend one of the meetings, the online survey is available to provide another opportunity for the public to share input on these topics and more.

Public input is important during this phase of the housing study because it will be used to test VCHR's analysis, add depth to their understanding of trends or data and guide additional or more in-depth study.

A video presentation that includes the scope and timeline for the housing study and housing affordability data in Virginia Beach is provided at the beginning of the online survey.
