September is National Preparedness Month: Learn How You Can Prepare

September represents National Preparedness Month, which serves as the yearly initiative to reinforce the importance of getting ready for emergencies and disasters to ensure the safety of individuals, families, and communities.

IUP Emergency Management eagerly participates in the observance of National Preparedness Month alongside the Federal Emergency Management Agency. We are dedicated to fostering preparedness by conducting a series of trainings and drills throughout this month.

Our emphasis for this month will center on five key areas:

  1. Hands-only CPR/AED: Learn how and when to use an AED. Hands-only CPR can be just as effective as conventional CPR. Learn what Hands-only CPR is and how to give it. The power is in your hands!
  2. Stop the Bleed: We'll highlight important tips on stopping life-threatening bleeding in an emergency. This essential skill could save a life-yours or someone else's.
  3. Emergency Alerts: Ensure you're signed up for the university's emergency alert system! We'll share information on receiving timely notifications and what to do when you get them, as well as test our emergency notification system.
  4. Active Shooter: These situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Learn how to help prevent and prepare for potential situations.
  5. Fire Drills, and Emergency Exits and Evacuation: Knowing where to go in an emergency can make all the difference. This week will focus on evacuation routes, safe meeting places, and the importance of practicing your exit strategy.

In the coming weeks, keep an eye out for further details regarding the dates, times, and locations of the trainings and drills in which you can take part.
