Have your say on proposed designs for False Creek’s future waterfront park

Residents, visitors and businesses are invited to share their thoughts on concept designs for a new waterfront park in Vancouver's Olympic Village.

Following initial engagement with local Nations and the community, the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is now asking those who live, work and play in the False Creek area for feedback on preliminary concepts for the project currently known as East Park.

From March 26 to April 16, the public is invited to review two designs which propose a mix of habitat areas, connections and welcoming park features for the south side of the East Park site, between the Seaside Greenway and East First Avenue.

Before the future park's concept plan goes to the Park Board for decision later in the fall, further information will be shared on proposals for the waterfront north of the Seaside Greenway. This work will be completed in coordination with a City of Vancouver-led project to determine next steps for the Expo Deck adjacent to Science World.

In parallel, the City is seeking feedback on a proposed car-free block on Ontario Street (from Walter Hardwick Avenue to Athletes Way) and sharing information about upgrades to the Ontario Greenway (between Walter Hardwick Avenue and Second Avenue). These upgrades will improve connections between three of the city's most popular walking and cycling routes: the Ontario, Central Valley and Seaside greenways.

A new waterfront destination

Once a place with a diverse ecosystem where Indigenous peoples stewarded healthy relationships with the land and water, the shoreline of False Creek was dramatically altered in the early 20th century as industry and development in the area grew. The streams and thriving ecosystems were gradually buried, depleting the health of the land and water.

Situated between the emerging Railyard neighbourhood and Olympic Village, East Park will serve as both a waterfront destination and an essential neighbourhood hub, providing key connections to the waterfront, neighbouring parks and community amenities.

The project design and development will be guided by the Northeast False Creek parks guiding principles and will reflect xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) cultures and values.

An official park name will be identified and announced through a separate naming process.
