How Shore Cancer Center’s Social Worker Can Help

In addition to the clinical experts in medical and radiation oncology, the team at Shore Cancer Center also includes caring and compassionate support staff to help patients and their families every step of the way. One of these key members is Oncology Certified Social Worker Candice Tummillo, MSW, LCSW, OSW-C.

Candice is dedicated to helping patients and their support system with overcoming many hurdles and burdens, that are exponentially more challenging with a cancer diagnosis.

"When a patient is told that they have cancer, they are instantly overwhelmed with issues, thoughts, feelings, and emotions that they never had before," said Tummillo. "Challenges range from financial to emotional and everything in between.

Candice adds, "My role is to do whatever I can to help our patients and those that are supporting them during this incredibly difficult time"

In many cases, patients and their caregivers have to stop working, and quickly become in need of money to pay their bills and necessities. Patients can turn to Candice, who is experienced in the application process for leave of absences, short-term and long-term disability, charity care, and even co-pay forgiveness for medications.

"Patients and their caregivers can quickly become overwhelmed with the paperwork, the process, and the thoughts of how they are going to pay for their rent, mortgages, utilities, food and so much more." Candice explains. "I work directly with their patients to help them with these financial concerns, and I leave no stone unturned when it comes to finding resources to help."

In addition, Candice provides much needed emotional support. "Patients are scared and there are so many unknowns. They feel that they have lost control, and need to talk with someone and share their feelings. I'm here to listen. I'm here to be a shoulder to cry on. I'm here to be whatever our patients need me to be, from diagnosis to treatment to survivorship post treatment."

After their treatment and regular visits are concluded, patients typically have follow-up visits with their doctors, initially several times a year and then on an annual basis. While the frequency of the medical visits lessens, Candice's accessibility never ends.

Candice shares, "After treatment, patients are often asking themselves, 'Now What?' I am always available for them, and available to support them in the process of finding the necessary resources and support in their survivorship journey. I love helping people, and the relationships I have formed with our patients and their families, and I treasure the role and responsibilities I have as the Oncology Social Worker at Shore Cancer Center. I am here to help in any way I can."
