D.A. Bragg Announces Prison Sentence For Man Who Raped Two Teenage Girls

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the sentencing of GREGORY SMITH, 32, for raping two teenage girls in Harlem. On April 14, 2023, a New York State Supreme Court jury found SMITH guilty of one count each of Rape in the First Degree, Criminal Sexual Act in the First Degree, Rape in the Third Degree, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and two counts of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree.

"Gregory Smith lured two teenagers into his company, raped them, and then attempted to bribe them for their silence," said District Attorney Bragg. "I thank these young survivors for bravely reporting this despicable behavior, which aided our prosecutors in their fight for accountability."

As proven at trial, on March 7, 2020, the 19-year-old survivor met SMITH at a Dunkin Donuts on W. 125^th St. SMITH said he had marijuana to sell her in his apartment, which was only a few blocks away in the Manhattanville Houses and convinced her to follow him. Once inside of the apartment, SMITH assaulted and threatened to kill her before raping her. The woman attempted to leave several times, but SMITH prevented her escape by threatening and assaulting her.

A year later, on April 23, 2021, SMITH met a 16-year-old - who was a victim of a sex trafficking scheme - online. SMITH paid for a cab to bring her to a hotel in Harlem at 3 a.m., where they smoked marijuana and consumed pills. The woman fell asleep at some point and woke up without clothes on at around 8 a.m., realized she had been raped, fled the scene, and called 911 to report that she had been raped.

After his arrest, SMITH tried to bribe the family of the 19-year-old survivor and offered her and her family money if she did not testify.SMITH promised he would be acquitted if she did not testify, and that he would sue the City for wrongful imprisonment and split the proceeds. SMITH also harassed, threatened, and tried to bribe the 16-year-old survivor from jail, calling her more than one hundred times in violation of an Order of Protection issued by the court.

Assistant D.A.s Kaitlyn Flatley (Deputy Bureau Chief of the Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Bureau), Arielle Evans, and Nikolai De Jesus handled the prosecution of this case under the supervision of Assistant D.A.s Vanessa Puzio (Deputy Bureau Chief of the Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Bureau), Shannon Lucey (Deputy Chief of the Special Victims Division), Nicole Blumberg (Chief of the Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Bureau), and Executive Assistant D.A. Justin McNabney (Chief of the Special Victims Division). Trial Preparation Assistants Abigail Simon, Tyler Friedman, Noah Taylor, Kimberly Mohabeer, Charlotte McCarthy, and Andrea Jeng, as well as Digital Evidence Analyst Ryan Strick, all assisted with the investigation and trial. The Witness Aid Services Unit, especially Nakeisha Vanterpool and Angela Feliciano, provided countless hours of outreach, care and counseling to the victims in this case.

District Attorney Bragg thanked the NYPD, especially Monique Dulanto and Andre Arias of the Manhattan Special Victims Squad, and Natalie Prisco of the 115^th Precinct, formerly of the 28^th Precinct.
