Congressman Krishnamoorthi Responds To DuPage Sheriff James Mendrick’s Commitment to Enforce All State And Local Laws, Including The Protect Illinois Communities Act

WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Krishnamoorthi (IL-08) issued the following response to the joint statement from DuPage County Board Chair Deborah Conroy, Sheriff James Mendrick, and State's Attorney Robert Berlin on public safety in DuPage County:

"I was encouraged to learn that Sheriff Mendrick reversed his prior stance and explicitly agreed to enforce all state and local laws within his jurisdiction, including the Protect Illinois Communities Act. The enforcement of democratically established laws is fundamental, not only to public safety, but also to maintaining the trust of the public in government institutions. I would like to thank DuPage County Board Chair Deborah Conroy, State's Attorney Robert Berlin, my congressional colleagues, and other state and local officials who weighed in on this matter to help clarify the law and take this step forward in combating gun violence in our communities."

On January 19th, Congressman Krishnamoorthi partnered with Representatives Sean Casten (IL-06), Delia Ramirez (IL-03), Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04), Mike Quigley (IL-05) and Bill Foster (IL-11) in sending a letter to DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick expressing deep concern over his January 13th statement that he would not enforce the Protect Illinois Communities Act (H.B. 5471). The members then held a press conference on January 23rd to reiterate the importance of enforcing the laws of Illinois.
