Larson Votes for Historic Investment for Jobs, Opportunities, and Working Families

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) voted for H.R. 4502, FY 2022 Seven-Bill Appropriations Minibus. This package includes the following seven appropriations bills: Labor-HHS-Education; Agriculture, Rural Development, FDA; Energy and Water Development; Financial Services and General Government; Interior-Environment; Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Transportation-HUD.

'To recover from this pandemic, we need robust investments across the board. I'm proud to support today's appropriations package, because it invests in education, health care, worker protections, and environmental justice. It will also create tens of thousands of jobs to rebuild our nation's infrastructure, expand access to affordable housing, and bolster our nation's public health infrastructure. Over the past year and a half, we've seen firsthand why we need these investments. This year's funding package led by Connecticut's own Chair Rosa DeLauro fulfills the promise of building back better,' said Larson. How this helps Connecticut's First District:

Job Training

In Connecticut's 1st Congressional District, 14,000 youth and 104,000 adults are eligible to receive federally funded job training. In 2020, the district received $3.9 million in Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Adult and Youth State Grants.

House Democrats' appropriations bill provides $3.1 billion in WIOA funds for job training for disadvantaged youth and adults, and for assistance to dislocated workers, an 8.8 percent increase over 2021.

This increase would provide $315,000 in additional WIOA funds for job training in the district. The additional funds support middle class and working families by helping youth and adults obtain good-paying jobs.

Public Education

In Connecticut's 1st Congressional District, an estimated 33,000 children benefited from federal Title I education funding in 2021, including 15,000 children living in poverty, receiving monthly Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), or in foster care or delinquency. In 2021, the district received $32.5 million in Title I funds.

House Democrats' appropriations bill provides $36 billion in Title I funds, a 118 percent increase over 2021.

This increase would provide $38.3 million in additional funding for schools in the district to support these children at risk of failing out of school.

Veterans' Health Care

In Connecticut's 1st Congressional District, there were 10,000 veterans signed up to receive healthcare from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) in 2020. The VHA spent $144 million in 2020 providing healthcare to 10,000 veterans in the district.

House Democrats' appropriations bill provides $98.5 billion for veterans' healthcare, an 8 percent increase over 2021.

This increase would provide an additional $31.6 million in funding for veterans' healthcare in the district. These additional funds will enable the VHA to improve access to health care in key areas like women's health, mental health, and opioid treatment; provide more veterans with home and community-based services; recruit and retain nurses and physicians; and support crucial medical research that improves veterans' health and quality of life.
