2024 Ningbo Civil Reading launched

On April 21, the 2024 Civil Reading Event of Ningbo, with the theme of "reading the classics with my children", was held in front of the Tianyi Pavilion Museum.

It is hoped that reading of the classics can lead to the civil reading campaign across the whole city.

As the first city in the province to promote civil reading through legislation, Ningbo has designated April as the "reading month" every year.

In recent years, Ningbo has continuously enriched the immersive reading experience, built diversified reading spaces, and cultivated interactive reading modes. As a result, it has been rated as a "model city for promoting civil reading" by the China Writers Association.

This year, the theme of the civil reading event is "reading the classics with my children". So it will integrate the resources from departments concerned at the city level and at the district (or county) level, social reading organizations, libraries, and bookstores, etc.

Ningbo has always been a cultural hub, with a thriving culture and numerous works since the Song Dynasty. The ancient farming and reading tradition, the profound book collection heritage, and the persistent spirit of seeking knowledge not only bring a wealth of culture and talents to Ningbo, but also serve as a continuous source of intellectual support and cultural nourishment for economic and social development.

This year's civil reading event, with the innovative theme of "reading the classics with my children", hopes to encourage children to experience in depth the beauty of words, literature, and excellent traditional Chinese culture through reading classics; and to encourage more and more people to participate in reading, support reading, and love reading, so that reading can be truly integrated into people's lives and the lifeline of the city.

The 2024 Ningbo Civil Reading event will adopt such methods as reading accompanied by parents, reading guided by teachers, socially accompanying reading, reading led by celebrities, and remote co-reading. By integrating various resources, and organizing and mobilizing various social forces, it aims to launch a civil reading campaign in Ningbo.

At the launching ceremony, some celebrated were invited and interviewed, including Sun Liming, Vice President of Fotile Group, Ling Zhenhe, a national judge for the Chinese Classic Recitation Conference and the dubbing actor for Li Bai in the animated film "Chang'an", as well as Chen Jingjing, the owner of one of the top ten most influential picture book museums in China and one of the top ten reading promoters in Ningbo. They shared their stories and feelings with everyone present on how to accompany children in reading the classics.

At the launching ceremony, the arrangement for the 2024 Ningbo Series Reading Activities was released. This year's civil reading activities, with the focus on "reading the classics with children", will be planned, designed, and organized in five categories: content supply, competition and selection, characteristic activities, publicity and promotion, and deepening and expanding.

As for content supply activities, 200 classic books suitable for children have been sorted out, 120 traditional cultural sites where parents and teachers can take children on a study tour have been identified, and 133 reading corners have been established to carry out classic reading activities with children. In total, over 3,500 characteristic reading activities will be organized.

Meanwhile, the list of classic books and the daily reading locations was also released at the launching ceremony. The release of the list of classics has opened up a Ningbo path for children to pay tribute to classics. With the "daily reading locations" and the "million students reading in Ningbo" activity, the local children will visit Ningbo's historical and cultural sites, and cultural celebrities' former residences, to immerse themselves in the environment and atmosphere of the classics.

At present, the Publicity Department of Ningbo Municipal Party Committee, the Municipal Federation of Trade Unions, and the publicity departments of all districts (or counties) have purchased the first batch of 120,000 classic books and distributed them to 20 Xinhua Bookstores in each district (or county). Citizens can adopt the online application and offline collection to receive the classic reading gifts for their children.

There will also be a series of characteristic activities. 18 activities will be carried out one after another since this month, including the "100 Classics Reading on Campus", "100 enterprises and 10,000 families reading classics", the "Youth Reading" action, the "parent-child reading in post stations", the "reading classics for beauty" activity, the "reading classics together in nature" activity, and the "co-reading classics with friends" activity.

This year, all the districts (and counties), libraries, bookstores, social reading organizations and even some enterprises in Ningbo have also planned diverse and colorful reading activities.

In addition, some influential activity brands will be further deepened and expanded, including the "classics reading lectures", book fairs and book releasing of renowned writers.

With the coming of the hopeful spring, it's good time for people to embrace and read the classics together, so as to enjoy the poetic flavor and beauty of reading.
