Rep. Grijalva Announces 2024 Congressional Art Competition Winner

TUCSON, Ariz. - Today, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (AZ-07) announced Sahuarita High School student, Amaris Aguilar, as the winner of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition. Her artwork, entitled "The Man", will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. As the winner, Amaris will be flown to Washington, D.C. to attend a reception where winners throughout the nation will be recognized.

"The hands of my great-grandfather hold the stories of his life - the life that shaped a path for his family," said Aguilar. "From an abused and mistreated child to an adolescent who walked miles to the next town for work, to a WWII gunner who made it home to the love of his life. Every wrinkle and fine line on his hands is a story untold. I'm grateful for the stories that he shared and retold by family members who had the honor of listening to this great man."

"As a Tata myself, I appreciate Amaris recognizing the story of her great grandfather and the legacy he left behind," said Rep. Grijalva. "As members of Congress and visitors walk through the tunnels of the Capitol, we will be reminded of the sacrifices he, and so many like him, made for his family and to protect the country we all love. "

Rep. Grijalva's office received numerous art submissions from students across Southern Arizona. Those not chosen as the winner will have their work displayed in a local art gallery for one month as well as have their artwork on display at the Patagonia Fall Festival in October. Additionally, all participants will receive a Congressional Recognition certificate.
