City Council handled the year 2023 welfare account

Release -28.3.2024

Vantaa City Council handled, in its meeting on March 25, the 2023 welfare account, initiatives submitted by residents, as well as ratified the local detailed plan for Satomäenkuja in Jokiniemi.

A total of 44 citizens' initiatives were submitted to the city in 2023. The number of initiatives submitted remained at the same level as in the previous years. The subjects of the initiatives clearly focused on the Urban Environment department.

Wellbeing has become genderized

The city council discussed the citizens' increased feelings of insecurity, as well as increased bullying. In addition to those two, another essential observation is how often the phenomena are genderized. Adult obesity and too few hours of sleep have increased especially among women, whereas alcohol abuse is highlighted among men. Girls' experiences of their own state of health, physical abilities, as well as mental wellbeing are lower than those of boys. In addition, increased absences from school apply more often to girls than boys. On the other hand, boys are subjected to physical violence more than girls are, and there are more boys than girls in junior high school that say they have no close friends. Other important observations concerning the young are a significant increase in the use of electronic cigarettes, as well as an increased number of violent crimes committed by minors.

There are some positive observations, too: the number of visitors to the city's sports and cultural services is on the rise, and the elderly are provided with better digi support.

Small houses to be built in Jokiniemi

The city council approved the local detailed plan and alteration to plot division concerning Satomäenkuja in Jokiniemi. A block of small houses will be built along Satomäenkuja, on the lot of two one-family houses that will be demolished.

Furthermore, the city council handled city councilors' initiatives concerning a potential sister city in India; women and girls' swimming times at Vantaa swimming halls; the non-indigenous species and pest program; recycling sites' bulletin boards; Vantaa's joining the Carbon Action network; as well as integration in schools and daycare centers.

The meeting's itemized decision register is attached as an appendix. You will find the agenda and, later on, the minutes of the meeting online at: www.vantaa.fi/paatoksenteko
