City of Modesto Celebrates Black History Month

Black History Month has been officially celebrated in the United States since 1976 in order to promote the cultural, economic, political, and social contributions made by our black community to help build this great nation.

The 2023 national theme for the observance is "Black Resistance," which recognizes that African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms.

The City of Modesto is committed to equity and inclusion and continues to work toward becoming an inclusive community in which all residents, past, present, and future, are respected and recognized for their contributions to our community and country.

The Modesto City Council hereby proclaims the month of February 2023 as Black History Month in the City of Modesto and urges all our residents to commit to working toward the ideals of equality, freedom, unity, and the abundance of opportunities that our country represents.
