Gauteng Police arrest more than 940 suspects during Operation Shanela over the weekend

PARKTOWN - The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni led yet another successful Operation Shanela in the Province over the weekend. More than 940 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, rape, business robbery, dealing in drugs, and possession of suspected stolen vehicles, assault and illegal immigrants.

The multi-disciplinary operation started on the evening of Saturday, 04 May 2024, with the raiding of wanted suspects, especially those who have committed crimes against women and children. Most of the suspects who thought they had evaded the law were hunted down and arrested in various parts of Gauteng.

The Provincial Commissioner led the operation in Ivory Park, Ekurhuleni District, where contact crimes like murder, assault and robbery are rife. At the roadblocks, police arrested more than 35 suspects who were found driving while under the influence of alcohol. A car was impounded after it was found to have been tampered with. A total of 19 illegal liquor outlets that are suspected to be contributing to crime were closed down, and liquor was confiscated during the raid.

Operation Shanela will continue in Gauteng until the crime is brought to its lowest level. The arrested suspects will appear at various Magistrate's Courts across the Province in due course.
