Les Beaucamps High School receives good ratings across in the board in Ofsted inspection

Thursday 23 May 2024

Les Beaucamps High School has received a very positive external inspection report, rating it good across all four categories of the framework.

These are: The Quality of Education; Behaviour and Attitudes; Personal Development and Welfare; and Leadership and Management.

Ofsted highlighted that at Les Beaucamps High:

  • The school has established a culture of positive behaviour that is well understood and respected by pupils. The values of the school are clearly linked to the routines and expectations that staff have of pupils.
  • The school has prioritised the planning and implementation of a broad and highly ambitious curriculum. Some subject leaders work with colleagues from across the Secondary School Partnership to share this work.
  • Teachers receive training and support to enhance their subject knowledge and skills. They use this to teach the curriculum effectively. Teachers check regularly what pupils know and can apply. They use this information to identify and remedy misconceptions and plan the next steps for pupils' learning.
  • The school places an emphasis on the importance of reading widely and for pleasure. The English curriculum introduces pupils to highly ambitious texts and literature.
  • The school has a clear and shared vision for the future. Leaders work collaboratively with staff. This means that staff are very positive about the culture of support and the high-quality training they receive.

In the section of the report dedicated to areas the school could improve, inspectors identified that for a few pupils, the school does not have high enough expectations of what they have the potential to achieve. This small minority of pupils do not engage with or learn the intended curriculum in full. Inspectors also found that, while the school has a clear understanding of pupils' individual needs and circumstances, it does not identify patterns or trends which may inform the school's priorities.

The external inspection agreement with Ofsted grades categories from inadequate to requires improvement, good and excellent.

Martin Haimes, Principal of Les Beaucamps High School, said:

'I am proud of our staff, pupils and whole school community. To achieve good in all categories is a testament of our collective hard work. I am particularly proud that Ofsted has recognised the significant positive steps we have made in curriculum development and delivery. Inspectors highlighted how well our staff work with colleagues across the Secondary School Partnership to share learning and best practice, which was very pleasing as we place a high priority on collaboration. Our student body as a collective is an incredible group of young people and I know all staff value them.'

Nick Hynes, Director of Education, said:

'I'd like to congratulate Martin and his team on what is a very positive Ofsted report. I've stated previously that it's challenging to attain good ratings across the board and the whole school community should be rightly pleased and proud.'

Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, President of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, said:

'On behalf of the Committee I'd like to congratulate Martin and all staff at Les Beaucamps High School and also thank them for their ongoing hard work. That includes students and the whole school community who contribute to the success of a school. A huge amount of work goes into ensuring that all our learners have every opportunity to achieve good outcomes and the inspection process is an important aspect of benchmarking the achievements of a school or education setting and for identifying areas for improvement with the benefit of an outside point of view.'
