What is a fire alarm system

25 April 2024Fire Safety

The fire alarm system plays a crucial role in preventive fire protection. But what is a fire alarm system and what exactly is behind this important safety device?

What is a fire alarm system?

The answer.

A fire alarm system (also known as a BMA system) is an essential component of fire protection in buildings. Its purpose is to provide early warning of smoke and fire and, in an emergency, to initiate the necessary measures to save lives and minimize property damage. These systems are connected to various types of fire detectors, including both manual and automatic ones.

In the event of a fire, manual fire detectors, also known as red manual call points, and automatic fire detectors such as smoke detectors play a crucial role. As soon as these devices detect smoke or fire, they immediately send information to the fire alarm control panel (FACP). This central control unit is the heart of the fire alarm system and then triggers a series of actions.

The most important function

One of the most important functions of the fire alarm system is to alert the local fire department. As soon as a fire alarm is triggered, the FACP automatically forwards the relevant information to the fire department so that they can arrive at the scene as quickly as possible. At the same time, internal alarms are triggered to warn people in the building and possible fire controls are activated.

Other functions

Fire control systems are mechanisms that automatically trigger various safety precautions in the event of a fire. These include, for example, the opening of smoke vents, the closing of fire barriers and the activation of other fire protection devices. These measures serve to prevent the spread of fire and facilitate the evacuation of the building.

The areas of application

Fire alarm systems are mainly used in industrial buildings and commercial enterprises, but also in all other applications where building regulations are imposed on special buildings. As a rule, the

requirements for a fire alarm system usually result from the building permit or a fire protection concept. The installation and operation of a fire alarm system is carried out in accordance with the requirements of DIN 14675 for the installation and operation of fire alarm systems and DIN VDE 0833-1/2 for hazard detection systems.

What is a fire alarm system?

In a nutshell.

Overall, the fire alarm system is an indispensable tool for protecting human life and property in the event of a fire. Thanks to its early warning and automatic initiation of protective measures, it makes a significant contribution to safety in buildings.
