Marine litter poses a huge threat to the environment, severely affecting the health of our oceans and ecosystems. The problem is so grave that some scientists warn that by 2050, the quantity of plastics in the oceans will outweigh that of fish.
To tackle this serious issue, the European Union (EU), in partnership with the United Nations, organises its #EUBeachCleanup campaign every year.
It aims to raise awareness about marine pollution and the significant impact of human actions on our oceans and rivers. In 2023, 45,700 participants took part in 555 events across 44 countries.
On 14 September, staff from the EU Delegation and EU Member State embassies participated in a beach-cleaning event at Odaiba Kaihin Park.
By taking part such initiatives, the EU and its Member States show their dedication as 'Team Europe' to protecting the planet, fostering community spirit and encouraging sustainable actions, not least in partner countries such as Japan.
