President Alar Karis met today in Kadriorg with his Swiss counterpart Viola Amherd, who is in Estonia on the first foreign visit of her presidency. "Estonia and Switzerland are partners with similar values," the Estonian head of state remarked. "We both feel that relations between the European Union and Switzerland can and should be better regulated, particularly when it comes to the rules of the internal market. This would provide both EU and Swiss citizens with greater opportunities to work even more closely together. I hope that negotiations to reach agreement on a new cooperative framework will be able to start in the near future."
President Karis said that Estonia and Switzerland were equally vocal advocates of international law, with both countries offering wide-ranging support to Ukraine. "This must continue," he stressed in his meeting with President Amherd, who also serves in the capacity of the Swiss Minister of Defence. "The peace process instigated by President Zelenskyy has our full backing, and we welcome Switzerland's decision to attend the peace process summit."
As an example of successful Swiss-Estonian cooperation, President Karis highlighted the funding agreement signed by the two countries to support integration and a biodiversity programme in Estonia. "The contribution that Switzerland has made to the training programmes we have already launched for Ukrainian refugees has been of significant help," the head of state said, "and as part of the biodiversity programme we are developing innovative new solutions for monitoring."
