Secretary Pate announces voter, candidate deadlines for House District 29 special election

DES MOINES - Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate alerts voters and candidates of a condensed timeline for the upcoming special election in Iowa House District 29. Requests for absentee ballots through the mail must be received by the Jasper County Auditor by Monday, September 27. The candidate filing deadline is Tuesday, September 28.

The election is taking place because of the resignation of Rep. Wes Breckenridge. Due to the Iowa Legislature convening a special session on October 5, under Iowa law, Governor Reynolds was required to set the election date at the earliest practical date with 18 days' notice. When the Iowa Legislature is not in session, special elections to fill legislative vacancies take place 40 days from the date of announcement.

'If you plan to vote absentee by mail, get your request in as soon as possible,' Secretary Pate said. 'You can also vote in-person at the Jasper County Auditor's office through October 11, and at the polls on October 12. I encourage every eligible Iowan in House District 29 to make their voice heard by being a voter.'

Absentee ballots must be received by the Jasper County Auditor by 8 p.m. on October 12. Voters and candidates needing more information about the House District 29 Special Election should visit the Iowa Secretary of State's website, sos.iowa.gov.
