Hickenlooper: ‘Republicans Will Do Anything But Actually Help Us Fix Border Crisis’

Comments come after Republicans halt Senate business to take up impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary over policy differences

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper released the statement below after Republicans brought the Senate to halt, forcing it to focus on the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

"MAGA Republicans will do anything but actually help us fix the border crisis.

"Impeaching Mayorkas because they disagree with current immigration laws won't actually change those laws. Passing the bill Republicans demanded, Democrats negotiated and voted for, actually would. We could've passed that bill 69 days ago.

"Why are they voting for impeachment instead of the bill? Because they've decided campaigning on it is better than fixing it."

House Republicans voted to impeach Mayorkas, without evidence. Mayorkas is the first cabinet secretary to be impeached in 150 years. His impeachment would not resolve the ongoing crisis at the border.

Senator Hickenlooper supports comprehensive immigration reform including a legal pathway for DREAMers, TPS recipients, and essential workers. Hickenlooper has advocated for additional federalsupport for cities like Denver who have borne the brunt of expenses for taking in migrant families, for cutting red tape to ensure skilled laborers and H2-Bvisaworkers can fill workforce gaps, and phasing out outdated visa caps. ###
