Hasani: The use of autonomous systems must be founded only on norms, values, international laws and respect for human rights

The Minister for Europe and Foregn Affairs, Mr. Igli Hasani participated to the Vienna Conference "Humanity at the Crossroads: Autonomous Weapons Systems and the Challenge of Regulation", organized by the Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria, Alexander Schallenberg. The Conference focused on the need to regulation with regard to the increased autonomy of weapons through the introduction of artificial intelligence.

Minister Hasani appreciated the commitment of Austria for its engagement and concrete efforts to discuss the progress related to this very current topic and the challenges it conveys.

The Albanian chief diplomat underlined that Albania, as a NATO member country, supports the use of the autonomous weapons system, only on the basis of international laws and human rights.

"The use of the autonomous systems must be founded only on norms, values, international laws and respect for human rights".

"Trust is a key enabler to harness the potential of autonomous systems. Allies and NATO will seek to build appropriate levels of trust in the performance and benefits of autonomous systems by establishing technology, operational and above all in public trust ", emphasized Minister Hasani in his intervention.

In 2023, Albania supported and co-sponsored Resolution 78/241 "On the Autonomous Lethal Weapons System", proposed by Austria and approved during the UN General Assembly.

The resolution emphasizes the importance of clearly defining the regulatory framework for their use, increasing international cooperation between state and non-state actors.
