Pelosi Statement on Senate Republicans’ Unanimous Vote Against Women’s Health Freedom

Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after Senate Republicans unanimously voted against legislation to enshrine Roe v. Wade into law:

"Today, Senate Republicans lined up in lockstep behind Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump to vote to rip away the Constitutional right to health freedom from American women across the nation. While Democrats are fighting to enshrine Roe v. Wade into law, Republicans remain fully committed to punishing and controlling women's most personal health decisions.

"As last week's draft ruling made clear, a Republican-appointed Supreme Court majority is poised to strike down Roe: a long-held and cherished goal of a radical Republican Party. Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress and across the country have mobilized around a dangerous and extremist agenda: seeking not only to criminalize abortion but also many other basic forms of reproductive care, including in vitro fertilization and post-miscarriage care. In a Republican future, our daughters would, for the first time ever, have fewer freedoms than their mothers. And make no mistake: once Republicans eviscerate long-standing precedent and privacy rights with the Roe ruling, they intend to wage an all-out assault on more of our rights - including access to contraception and marriage equality.

"In this fight, the rights of women - and of all Americans - are on the line. Democrats will never relent in defending our fundamental freedoms - and the American people will remember who has sought to punish and control women's decisions and who has fought tirelessly alongside them when they cast their ballots this November."
