What About Wi-Fi? How To Extend the Green Broadband Experience Into the Home

Calix is helping broadband service providers (BSPs) build greener and cleaner networks by simplifying their network architectures. By reducing the network's physical footprint using Calix solutions, BSPs need less space, use less energy, and require fewer cooling resources. Many BSPs are managing to reduce their power consumption by more than 70 percent as a result.

If you're a BSP, this has a demonstrable impact on reducing carbon emissions from your network. But is it where your green broadband story ends?

Actually, no. Your network stretches beyond the access network, right into the subscriber premises. And so should your commitment to deploying environmentally friendly solutions.

US households have, on average, 16 devices connected to their in-home Wi-Fi. This includes additional mesh units or pods if the main internet gateway device is not able to extend Wi-Fi throughout the home. This means more devices and more energy is needed to maintain an acceptable Wi-Fi experience. In fact, energy consumption when using a meshed network can double, triple, or even quadruple compared to using a single high-power Wi-Fi system. For example, many mesh units use a mechanical fan for cooling, which continues to run whether the unit is active or not. These units are not only a major cause of high energy consumption-they're a likely point of failure too.

So how can you help your subscribers lower their energy bills without sacrificing whole-home Wi-Fi performance?

Calix has the solution. Based on the Calix Revenue EDGE ™ platform, the Calix GigaSpire® BLAST Wi-Fi systems are the only Wi-Fi equipment that your subscribers will ever need in the home. Here's why:

  • One system provides extensive reach: In 93 percent of deployments, one GigaSpire system is enough to ensure Wi-Fi coverage throughout the home. This means subscribers do not need to install additional pods or extenders.
  • Fewer pieces of equipment means less energy consumption: Subscribers are able to reduce the power requirements of their in-home Wi-Fi by 50 percent or more.
  • Carrier-class reliability and performance: The GigaSpire BLAST family is the only system subscribers may need for many years, avoiding unnecessary upgrades. This brings supply chain and stock control benefits too.
  • Remote troubleshooting and self-care: Service providers manage the GigaSpire BLAST using Calix Support Cloud (Support Cloud), enabling remote troubleshooting and minimal on-site support. This means fewer costly-and environmentally unfriendly-truck rolls to fix or replace equipment. Meanwhile, subscribers can configure the systems themselves via the CommandIQ® app.

Seamlessly Migrate to New Wi-Fi Technologies

The GigaSpire BLAST family incorporates the latest technologies, such as Wi-Fi 6E, the new Wi-Fi standard that takes advantage of the 6 GHz band. This delivers higher throughput and lower latency, but also increased network efficiency and better performance in dense environments. The GigaSpire BLAST portfolio includes multiple Wi-Fi 6E systems. All are designed with simple plug-and-play connectivity, snapping right into the Revenue EDGE ecosystem-which means no "rip and replace". The newly introduced GigaPro p6he even takes Wi-Fi 6E outdoors, opening up a range of new consumer and business possibilities.

Calix is committed to helping you build broadband networks that are sustainable and environmentally responsible. And that includes enabling sustainable and future-proof Wi-Fi within the subscriber's home. Now is the time to show your communities that the green broadband revolution doesn't stop at their front door.
