NEW: Mondaire Jones airs first campaign ad as House race with Mike Lawler shifts into high gear

Today, DCCC Red to Blue candidate Mondaire Jones announced a first week advertising buy of more than $1 million across broadcast, cable TV, streaming, and digital.

Jones, a prolific fundraiser, is kicking off the post Labor Day weekend sprint with an exceptionally large amount of paid advertising spending nine weeks out from Election Day.

The spot, titled "Insurance," highlights Jones' Rockland roots and experience watching his grandmother work past the age of retirement to afford prescription drugs. By contrast, his opponent, Mike Lawler, has repeatedly opposed lowering prescription drug costs for seniors and has opposed prohibiting insurance companies from discriminating against New Yorkers with pre-existing conditions like cancer and asthma.

DCCC Spokesperson Ellie Dougherty:
"Nine weeks out from Election Day, Mondaire Jones is communicating with and reaching every voter across the Lower Hudson Valley, making it clear that Mike Lawler can't hide from his shameful record of opposing lowering costs for seniors."

KEY POINTS:

  • Former Rep. Mondaire Jones is spending $1 million this week on a campaign ad focused on health care that will hit screens as his race with Rep. Mike Lawler heats up in the two-month stretch before the election.

  • His debut ad, which begins airing on TV and the internet on Tuesday, touches on two deeds Democrats are eager to promote, both achieved through laws they passed over Republican opposition in 2010 and 2022. The shorthand message of the 30-second commercial is that Lawler opposed those outcomes or wants to undo them.

  • "He would allow insurance companies to discriminate against New Yorkers with pre-existing conditions like cancer and asthma," Jones says of his opponent in the ad's voice-over.

  • Jones warns in his campaign that Republicans will try again if they win control. Lawler's campaign says he opposes repealing the Affordable Care Act, and always supported the aspect of the law highlighted in the ad - the protection for people with [pre-existing] conditions.

  • The ad also says Lawler "opposed lower prescription drug costs for seniors." That's a reference to the Inflation Reduction Act, the 2022 law that allowed Medicare to negotiate prescription drug costs for the first time. It also set a $2,000 annual cap on out-of-pocket drug costs for seniors, which will take effect in January.

  • "He is in the fight of his life to get re-elected in this district against someone who is finally holding him to account," Jones said of Lawler in an interview about his ad. "He is on the record opposing the Affordable Care Act. He is on the record opposing the Inflation Reduction Act, which I helped pass into law."
