Celebrating the Latinx Community

This month, we're celebrating Latinx* Heritage Month and Latinx drivers, riders, Lyft team members, and the community as a whole.

The Latinx community represents 25% of riders and 33% of drivers on the Lyft platform. For us, these numbers show the central role Lyft plays in creating economic opportunities and removing transportation barriers. Latinx drivers enjoy the flexibility to build their work around their lives instead of other way around, and our Latinx riders can continue to count on Lyft to connect to a driver and reliably get to and from their desired destinations.

Lyft Supports Drivers' Dreams

We are honored to uplift the experiences of Latinx drivers this month.

Latinx drivers are driving and earning on the Lyft platform to take care of their loved ones and fight for their dreams. Nearly 60% of Latinx drivers tell us that they drive with Lyft so they can provide care for family members and friends, 15% own their own small business in addition to driving on the Lyft platform, and 12% are concurrently pursuing their studies.

For example, Andre Espinoza, a driver in Arizona, and Ever Barrera, a driver in Massachusetts, shared with us how driving with Lyft has helped them achieve their goals and reach their dreams.

Andre's story:

"Driving with Lyft on my own time allows me to be home with my boys and drive when my main job is slower and does not have as much work. Having the ability to drive with Lyft whenever I can has been a blessing to me and my family. The secondary income I earn from driving has helped me to take care of them and save up for a house."

Ever's story:

"Lyft gives me the opportunity to financially support myself with the flexibility to pursue my dream job in criminal justice, while taking care of my kids, and even training for the Boston Marathon."

Addition of UnidosUS to Round Up & Donate

Through our LyftUp programs, we work to ensure everyone has access to affordable, reliable transportation to get where they need to go. Riders on our platform have the opportunity to directly support the work of Lyft's partner organizations by rounding up the cost of each ride they take to the nearest dollar and donating the difference. We're excited to announce that UnidosUS, a nationwide Latinx advocacy group, will now join the list of Lyft's partner organizations riders will be able to support through Round Up & Donate.

According to UnidosUs, "Latinos are less likely to have access to a car than their White peers (12% vs. 6.5%), and more likely to rely on public transit (27% daily/weekly usage vs. 14%). Latinos also often report bus routes are unreliable, infrequent, or even unsafe." By donating directly to organizations like UnidosUS, riders are able to help provide access to free and discounted rides to those who need them most.

This Latinx Heritage Month, Lyft will continue to play our part to elevate community stories and uplift the diverse lives, experiences, and dreams of the Latinx community nationwide.

*UpLyft Unidos - our internal Employee Resource Group - has held extensive discussions and coalesced around the use of "Latinx" to acknowledge the vast diversity and intersectionality of the Latin American community including all gender identities, languages, and racial/ethnic backgrounds. Unidos brings together Lyft team members who are passionate about advocating for the success and advancement of Latinx, Hispanics, and Spanish-speakers at Lyft, in tech, and in the larger community. Unidos seeks to ensure that the Latinx community is fairly represented in our workspace, on the Lyft platform, and beyond.
