Back to back champions: Piedmont Natural Gas technicians lasso second straight title at national rodeo competition

  • Piedmont and Duke Energy teams take home eight awards from the 2024 National Gas Rodeo

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A four-person team of Piedmont Natural Gas technicians from Greenville, S.C., earned the overall championship title at the 2024 National Gas Rodeo. This marks the second consecutive title for the Greenville team, and the seventh time Piedmont has won the national championship.

"We are proud to bring home another national title after an intense competition against the best natural gas workers from across the country," said Brian Weisker, president of Piedmont Natural Gas. "The National Gas Rodeo is a true test of the skills our crews and technicians use every day to provide our customers with safe, reliable natural gas service."

Piedmont and Duke Energy earned first-, second- and third-place honors out of the 45 two-person and four-person teams representing companies from 17 states.

  • The Greenville, S.C.-based team also earned top honors in the meter set, service installation, hand dig and relay events.
  • A four-person team from Charlotte, N.C., placed second overall at the competition and best in the pipe-cut event.
  • A two-person team representing Duke Energy, the parent company of Piedmont, placed third overall.

For the first time in company history, Duke Energy hosted the National Gas Rodeo. The annual competition, held this year at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., allows natural gas workers to showcase their skills and to see how they stack up against their industry peers.

The National Gas Rodeo pits two-person and four-person teams against each other in four qualifying events, with the top teams in each division advancing to a final relay event. Qualifying events include the service installation, the meter set, the hand dig and the pipe cut. In the final relay, teams safely race to complete a series of tasks in the fastest time possible.

This year's natural gas rodeo winners are:

  • First place overall in the four-person division: Gas Masters: Jamie Exum, Cameron Smith, Peyton Huff, Chase McCroskey and Cody Adamson (alternate) of the Greenville, S.C.
  • Second place overall in the four-person division: Cutline Cowboys: Brian Trickett, Franyer Koschnny, Richard Bradley, Christian Hernandez, and Baley Hunt (alternate) of Charlotte, N.C.
  • Third place overall in the two-person division: The Duke Boys: Trevor Barrons, Hunter Barrons and Ryan Regenstein (alternate) of Cincinnati, Ohio.
