LOUISVILLE - Today, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3), released the statement below on the passing of University of Louisville basketball legend Wes Unseld:
'My earliest memory of Wes Unseld is as a lanky Seneca High School center, overshadowed by Mike Redd, but dominating games with his rebounding and defensive skills. Yet as great of an athlete as he was, he was an even better person. When my brother Bill broke his leg playing junior high basketball, Wes came to our house, signed his cast, and encouraged him. His career at Louisville was so impressive that he was a top draft pick and earned both the NBA's Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors with the Bullets in his first season. Most impressive, however, was his post-player career as a businessman and community leader in his adopted city of Baltimore. Too many younger Louisvillians will never appreciate his greatness, but he was a role model many would be wise to emulate. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones today.'
