Air Traffic Control colleagues enhance skills with the AOPA Flying Companion’s Course

London Biggin Hill Airport is delighted that two of its Air Traffic Control Assistants, Kira and Eddie, have recently made the most of training opportunities and completed the AOPA Flying Companion's Course.

Conducted by MP Flying Club, the 8-hour course teaches an abridged version of the early flight exercises and ground studies needed to gain a Private Pilot's Licence (PPL).

The course was adapted specifically for colleagues at London Biggin Hill to provide an insight into flight operations, air to ground communication and general aviation flight training.

The experience boosted Kira and Eddie's situational awareness of the local area, building on their understanding of the pilots' experience when flying to/from London Biggin Hill, thus assisting them as controllers.

Kira Steele, Air Traffic Control Assistant at London Biggin Hill Airport, said"The AOPA Flying Companion Course has enhanced my understanding of pilot perspectives, procedures and workload during the different phases of flight. This puts me one step ahead of the curve as I progress onto my Air Traffic Control Officer training, as I work towards qualifying as an Air Traffic Controller."

Rod Boath, Flying Instructor and Examiner at MP Flying Club, said "Kira and Eddie were dedicated students and demonstrated the desired standard of airmanship to successfully complete the 8-hour course. This training opportunity will benefit their day-to-day roles by underpinning their understanding of how pilots operate in and out of London Biggin Hill Airport. I wish Kira and Eddie continued success in their future careers."
