Technopolis' ESG Report 2022: On track towards carbon neutrality

Technopolis has published its ESG Report 2022, which summarizes the achievements and goals of the company's sustainability work. The sustainability report includes up-to-date information about the energy efficiency of Technopolis campuses, the development of the carbon footprint of buildings, customer satisfaction and employee well-being, among other things.

Technopolis is committed to making future workplaces sustainable. This not only means energy-efficient and efficiently used square meters but also more transparent reporting on the environmental impact of workspaces. The new sustainability report focuses on describing the progress of the company's long-term sustainability work in 2022 from the perspective of environmental impacts, social impacts and good governance.

"We want to be a forerunner in sustainability in the real estate industry and to enable a sustainable work environment for our customers. Last year, we made significant progress in our sustainability efforts: We improved the energy efficiency of our buildings by, for example, utilizing AI and increased the share of environmentally certified properties up to 85%," says Niko Pulli, CEO of Technopolis.

Since the beginning of 2022, all campuses have used solely carbon-free electricity. During the year, the first campuses achieved carbon neutrality in their overall energy consumption thanks to the introduction of carbon-neutral district heating solutions and active optimization of energy efficiency.

The company's energy use decreased and the number of environmentally certified square meters increased, while the carbon footprint (scope 1 and 2) per gross square meter reduced by approximately 40% compared to the previous year. Besides optimizing energy consumption, Technopolis improves the sustainability of properties by, for example, employing more user-friendly recycling solutions.

Carbon-neutral use of energy in Technopolis' properties advancing ahead of schedule

Technopolis aims for carbon-neutral energy use in all buildings by 2030.

"We are striving for carbon neutrality primarily through emissions reductions, for example, by optimizing energy consumption, utilizing the campuses' own renewable energy production and procuring energy from other carbon-neutral sources. So far, we have managed to reduce our carbon footprint purely through measures related to energy use and procurement, without any compensation," states Johanna Kivelä, Sustainability Manager at Technopolis.

At Technopolis, sustainability work entails continuous improvement and setting increasingly ambitious sustainability targets.

"In 2023, our sustainability efforts will particularly focus on energy efficiency and increasing the share of carbon-neutral energy. During this year, half of our campuses have already been carbon-neutral in terms of their total energy consumption, and, for example, the construction of a new off-site solar power plant that will produce around half of the electricity required by our Vilnius campus was recently finished in Lithuania," Kivelä continues.

The full Sustainability Report is available on Technopolis' website. The report has been drafted with partial reference to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reporting guidelines as well as the European Public Real Estate Association (EPRA) Sustainability Best Practices Recommendations (sBPR).
