Heights Line Grand Opening

Please join us on April 26 at 2:00 pm to celebrate the grand opening of The Heights Line, a unique linear park that was once a trolley line. The event will take place at 761 National Street. Through the Accelerate Memphis initiative, this neighborhood-led project has transformed a portion of National Street into a pedestrian-friendly public space in North Memphis, enhancing connectivity and promoting a vibrant community atmosphere.

The Heights Line is a testament to the power of community-led initiatives. It started with The Heights CDC reclaiming excess road capacity on National Street and building a temporary demonstration of the park in 2017. The City of Memphis, through the Accelerate Memphis program, then funded and completed the $4 million project.

Project management was led by Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development, Malasri Engineering, PLLC, EnSafe, TREKK Design Group, LLC, and Gresham Smith. Engineering was conducted by Alta Planning + Design (primary) and Kimley-Horn (secondary). Construction management led by Zellner Construction Services, LLC and construction inspections by Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. Additional city support was provided by the Divisions of Engineering, Public Works, and Memphis Parks.

"We are thrilled to commemorate the official opening of this first section of The Heights Line," said Jared Myers, Executive Director of the Heights CDC. "This project represents a collaborative effort to create a vibrant, accessible space for our community to enjoy." The first section of The Heights Line runs from Faxon to Macon. Once completed, The Heights Line will connect the Wolf River Greenway to the Shelby Farms GreenLine, the Broad Avenue Arts District, and Overton Park.

"This unique project creates an important asset for the community and connects to regional green infrastructure," said John Zeanah, Director of the Division of Planning and Development. "Accelerate Memphis projects like this demonstrate the possibilities for transformation when we invest in community infrastructure."

Instead of a ribbon cutting, the neighborhood chose a ribbon-tying ceremony to symbolize bringing together two parts of the community. Following the ribbon tying at 2:00 pm, there will be 2:00 pmration with live music, activities, and small business vendors from the neighborhood.
