Press Release: Torrance and Changhua Sign Friendship City Partnership Agreement

Torrance, Calif., March 15, 2023 - The City of Torrance and the City of Changhua signed into partnership, a Friendship City agreement this week. Torrance Mayor, George K. Chen who is traveling abroad on a personal trip with family, took a few days to meet with Changhua City officials a few days following his visit to Tainan City (where he also signed a Friendship City agreement), both in Taiwan.

Torrance Mayor Chen shared his appreciation for the warm hospitality shown by Changhua City Mayor Shish-Hsien Lin along with his colleagues and staff who hosted the signing event. Located along the western coast of Taiwan, Changhua City is one of the most developed areas in the region with manufacturing plants outpacing agriculture fields. Changhua is surrounded by mountains and is considered a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Leading up to the signing event, both cities shared common interests and goals of elevating the welfare and prosperity of one another's cities through
this partnership.

According to the agreement, the two cities will make a joint effort to encourage economic development and provide support for business investments, enhance and implement cultural, educational, athletic, technical, and youth exchanges and collaborations. City officials from Changhua say they hope to visit Torrance later this year to gain a better understanding of our technology, infrastructure, transportation methods among other areas of potential mutual interest.

Mayor Chen said, "By expanding our partnerships abroad with wonderful cities in Taiwan like Changhua and Tainan, and hopefully Hwaseong, Korea, we are creating unique opportunities to share on a global scale the Why Torrance experience. And as a result of expanding our cultural awareness through friendship and mutual understanding, I hope to develop support in various industries like biomedical and biotechnology, education, student exchanges and much more."
