Investing Paradise

Embarking on a journey of discovery, the Field Biology and Ecology class at Southwestern Adventist University is gearing up for an unforgettable adventure to Hawaii. This summer, under the guidance of Dr. Arthur Schwarz, eight eager students are set to explore the tropical paradise, delving into its rich ecological history and captivating landscapes.

This summer class will unravel the mysteries of Hawaii's unique ecosystem, tracing the footsteps of species that arrived long before the Polynesians set foot on its shores over a millennium ago. Dr. Schwarz adds, "...students will learn about the unique environment of the Hawaiian Islands, including how the islands were formed, their topographic features, recent volcanism, the influence of the ocean, climate, and ecological processes."

Dr. Schwarz's meticulously planned itinerary will lead the group to the main island of Hawaii for eight days, followed by five days of exploration on the island of Kauai. This hands-on learning will blend education with adventure, offering students a chance to learn and enjoy in equal measure.

Reflecting on past trips, Dr. Schwarz highlights some of the unforgettable moments that await this year's participants. From snorkeling coral reefs to swimming alongside spinner dolphins, each day will be filled with awe-inspiring encounters with Hawaii's rich biodiversity. Whether spotting endangered species like the Hawaiian Monk Seal and Nene Goose or trekking to remote valleys once inhabited by early settlers, students will create memories to last a lifetime.

Open to students enrolled in Mr. Schwarz's classes during the spring semester of 2025, this excursion is made possible through a STEM grant, the students themselves, as well as the Department of Biological Sciences . With funding provided for ten enthusiastic learners, this immersive journey offers a rare opportunity to connect with nature and deepen one's appreciation for God's creation.
