【Primetals Technologies, Ltd.】ArcelorMittal Chooses Primetals Technologies for Extensive Hot-Strip Mill Automation Upgrade

  • Primetals Technologies to supply Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems, part of the auxiliary drives, and sensors for the hot-strip mill in Sestao, Spain
  • Modernization to result in increased yield and improved product quality

ArcelorMittal has signed a contract with Primetals Technologies for a comprehensive automation upgrade at its compact strip production plant in Sestao, Spain. Primetals Technologies will supply a new Level 1 system, as well as Level 2 automation systems. The project also involves Primetals Technologies supplying part of the auxiliary drives, several new sensors, and implementation and startup services.

Optimized Yield

State-of-the-art control systems will ensure an increased yield by reducing downtime and enhancing mill availability. Additionally, the process optimization system enables more accurate calculations for the production process, minimizing production disruptions and further optimizing yield. Recently, Primetals Technologies implemented a similar Level 1 automation system at ArcelorMittal's hot-strip mill in Eisenhüttenstadt, Germany.

Improved Coiling Temperature

The Level 2 automation system is based on advanced mathematical models related to thermodynamics and other branches of physics. A unique and comprehensive model calculates the temperatures holistically throughout the finishing mill and cooling section, resulting in improved coiling temperatures and a refined microstructure. Primetals Technologies' process models utilize modern optimization methods and sophisticated AI-backed machine-learning algorithms to enhance product quality.

As part of the project, Primetals Technologies is also implementing the Contour and Flatness Optimizer, a solution that handles a wide range of tasks, including contour and flatness calculations and control of shape.

In response to growing demand for XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, ArcelorMittal Sestao is ramping up production toward an 800,000 tons run-rate this year while working on securing long-term agreements for decarbonized steel with its customers. XCarb® is an umbrella brand that groups together all of the reduced, low, and zero carbon steelmaking activities of ArcelorMittal.
