COSATU urges Pitso Mosimane and the Compensation of Occupational Injuries and Diseases Fund to compensate his former domestic worker in full

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) urges Mr. Pitso Mosimane and his family as well as the Compensation of Occupational Injuries and Diseases Fund to compensate his former domestic worker, Ms. Dorothy Sikirivao, who has reported that she suffered serious and permanent injuries at the Mosimane home in 2021 in the course of fulfilling her duties.

It is deeply disconcerting that the Mosimane family is reported to be ignoring claims for compensation that Ms. Sikirivao has submitted, in spite of these being elevated to legal demands.

Workplace accidents and injuries will occur at all workplaces, it is critical that all employers ensure their employees are registered with the Compensation Fund and when such accidents or injuries occur, that these are treated by medical professionals and claims submitted to the Fund.

COSATU is angered by reports alleging the Mosimane family is simply choosing to ignore Ms. Sikirivao. It appears the Mosimane family failed to assist Ms. Sikirivao to register with and lodge her claim at the Compensation Fund as required by the Compensation Act.

We urge the Mosimane to compensate Ms. Sikirivao for her injuries and loss of income. We call upon the Compensation Fund to meet with Ms. Sikirivao to ensure that she is covered for her injuries, medical claims and loss of earnings. COSATU will be engaging with the Department of Employment and Labour to ensure Ms. Sikirivao receives the fair compensation she is legally entitled to.

Workers deserve to be treated with dignity and their labour rights respected by all employers without exception.
