RCMP NL participates in Operation Impact with increased enforcement expected this Thanksgiving weekend

During the Thanksgiving weekend, October 7-10, RCMP NL will join police forces across Canada to increase traffic enforcement for Operation Impact, an annual initiative to increase road safety.

Operation Impactfocuses on education and enforcement of the four most significant factors of serious and fatal collisions: impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and lack of seatbelt use. This year's theme of "Put Your Best Foot Forward" is very fitting when it comes to the safe and sober operation of motorized vehicles and aligns with Canada's Road Safety Strategy 2025: Towards Zero which strives to make Canada's roads the safest in the world.

Over the long weekend, RCMP NL will be increasing enforcement and conducting checkpoints throughout the province to remove impaired drivers from roadways and to ensure that motorists are driving safely with their seat belts fastened. With an increase in traffic expected, motorists are encouraged to plan ahead to arrange a designated driver if needed, to exercise patience when traveling and to allow for extra travel time to ensure everyone arrives safely at Thanksgiving celebrations.

If you suspect a driver to be impaired, or is an immediate threat to road safety, call 911 with the following, if possible:

  • A description of the vehicle and driver
  • A licence plate number
  • The direction the vehicle is travelling

Operation Impact is led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) in support of Canada's Road Safety Strategy 2025. Let's all do our part to put our best foot forward while driving this Thanksgiving weekend to make the roadways safe for all users.

RCMP NL continues to fulfill its mandate to protect public safety, enforce the law, and ensure the delivery of priority policing services in Newfoundland and Labrador.
