More Winter Weather Forces University Closing Thursday, Feb. 2

02/01/2023

JONESBORO - Arkansas State University remains closed for Thursday, Feb. 2, due to the lingering impacts of a significant winter storm.

While Facilities and Residence crews made significant progress today with campus roads and sidewalks, the National Weather Service in Memphis is predicting another round of freezing rain tonight into the early hours of Thursday. Combined with lows in the 20s, it is likely that travel to and around campus will be difficult tomorrow.

As a result, all on-campus classes are canceled for Feb. 2, and all academic and business offices remain closed. There are changes, however, for on-campus student services.

For Thursday, Feb. 2:

• The Reng Student Union will open on Thursday for on-campus student usage at 8 a.m., closing at 8 p.m.

• A-State Dining Services will operate Acansa Dining Hall on brunch hours.

• Campus retail dining areas will open as staff is available.

• The Dean B. Ellis Library will be open from noon until 7 p.m. with limited staff.

• Red W.O.L.F. Center will also open limited hours from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The Red Wolves' Sun Belt Conference men's basketball game with South Alabama will tip off at First National Bank Arena at 7 p.m. Please check AStateRedWolves.com for modifications on parking and entrances for Thursday's game.

Essential personnel who maintain on-campus activities, including our University Housing and Facilities Management, will report to work on Thursday, Feb. 2. If individual employees have questions regarding who is essential personnel, please check with your supervisor.

With a forecast for Thursday afternoon including highs in the mid-30s and an end to winter precipitation, it is anticipated that campus will be ready to resume regular operations on Friday, Feb. 3; however, a final determination will be made tomorrow afternoon.

As an ongoing reminder for campus residents and for parents of campus residents, while classes or offices close for winter weather, residence halls and dining services remain open as will other on-campus support services as practical.

For updates, please check the university's main website, AState.edu, and the university's official social media accounts Facebook.com/ArkansasState and Twitter.com/ArkansasState.

Classes for A-State Online students and instructors continue as usual. Since power or connectivity issues may impact both students and instructors, the AOS team is asking everyone to prepare to give extra time as needed for online coursework.
