NV Energy, City of Reno sign energy partnership agreement

Agreement creates joint commitment to collaborate on shared energy goals

May 22, 2024 4:23 PM

Today, the Reno City Council approved an energy partnership agreement with NV Energy during a city council meeting. The agreement is a powerful step between the two entities to allow more collaboration around initiatives that support the City's clean energy future and improve system resilience and reliability.

"NV Energy is very proud and grateful for our longstanding relationship with the City of Reno. This energy partnership agreement creates a place for us to collaborate on our mutual goals on energy improvements and work together to achieve them," said Ryan Bellows, NV Energy Vice President of Government and External Relations. "Reno and NV Energy are committed to working together to support and achieve each other's vision for the benefit of the residents and businesses in our community."

The energy partnership agreement was reached alongside the City's renewal of NV Energy's electric and gas franchise agreements. Since franchise agreements are long term agreements, including the energy partnership agreement will allow a more collaborative approach that can be updated to reflect the City's goals and priorities.

"Our actions today will have a real impact on future generations," said Reno Vice Mayor Naomi Duerr. "This agreement represents a shared vision for a sustainable and resilient community. Together, we are prioritizing the long-term health and wellness of the Biggest Little City."

The agreement lays out the vision between the two entities and lays out specific collaborative efforts, including:

  • ·Accelerating the conversion of NV Energy streetlights in the City of Reno to LED light bulbs by the end 2026
  • ·Focusing NV Energy's conversion of older and unreliable electric facilities to improve reliability in areas of Reno
  • Pursuing renewable energy projects and community based resource resources to serve customers in Reno
  • Collaborating to accelerate the development of electric vehicle infrastructure in the city
  • Enhancing communication around tree trimming, pruning and natural disaster protection work carried out in Reno

The partnership agreement is the first of its kind that NV Energy has entered into and was approved unanimously by the City Council. The agreement and supporting City Council materials can be found online here.
