The City of Fort Saskatchewan is proud to announce that the Treaty 6 and Métis Nation of Alberta flags will be raised at City Hall on Tuesday, June 27. The flag-raising ceremony will begin at 1:00pm and will be prefaced by words from Elder Jesse Morin and the Indigenous Society of Fort Saskatchewan. Attendees are encouraged to gather at 12:30pm to enjoy some light refreshments and time to mingle before the ceremony begins.

The City will also take this time to officially debut the new Every Child Matters mural in front of City Hall. Artist Ellie Lagrandeur will be present to offer her remarks.

Since 2021, City Council has directed staff to support the Indigenous community in Fort Saskatchewan through cultural programming and events, staff education, and recognition of the effects of colonialism on Indigenous Peoples in Canada. The City has also been honoured to work alongside the Indigenous Society of Fort Saskatchewan in the past year to further this support.

"I am immensely proud of our City in raising the Treaty 6 and Métis Nation of Alberta flags, in recognition of the vital contributions and enduring presence of the Indigenous Peoples in our community. This is a symbol of our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. Together, we shall continue building a stronger and more inclusive Fort Saskatchewan for all," says Mayor Gale Katchur.

The raising of the Treaty 6 and Métis Nation of Alberta flags symbolizes the City's commitment to Truth & Reconciliation and the intent of the organization to continue moving forward in a good way with the Indigenous community living in Fort Saskatchewan. The City would like to recognize Dow Canada for their generous contribution to the purchase of the flagpoles that make this important step forward possible.
