Phoenix Fire water safety Mock Drowning

On Thursday, March 28ththe Phoenix Fire Department held its annual mock drowning aimed at educating the community about the importance of water safety. With the summer season approaching and many residents likely to spend time near water bodies, the City of Phoenix wants to raise awareness and potentially save lives through this lifelike scenario.

With 90% of drownings reported in backyard pools, the event took place in a Phoenix backyard. The event was supported with cooperation of Phoenix police officers and firefighters included in the mock scenario. Local media was invited to observe the realistic simulation carefully orchestrated by trained professionals to emphasize key safety principles.

In the simulation a young child portrayed to be in distress in the water, as the parents of the child were distracted. Spectators witnessed the reaction from the parents to quickly pull the child from the pool, call 9-1-1, and start CPR. First responders arrived and worked to perform proper rescue techniques and procedures. Then, proceeded to load the child into the ambulance as if they would be taken to a nearby hospital.

Following the simulation, the Phoenix Fire Department and other partners including City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Aquatics Department, Phoenix Police, the Phoenix Fire Foundation, SRP, and the United Phoenix Firefighters Local 493 shared crucial safety tips and resources with the media.

Those tips emphasizing the importance of never swimming alone, always using barriers including pool fences, wearing life jackets when appropriate, and always supervising children closely around water.

As the event concluded informational pamphlets, brochures, and other materials containing valuable water safety tips and resources were shared. Door hangers with the ABCs of water safety from Phoenix Fire Fire's Drowning Zero campaign were also distributed in both English and Spanish.

By organizing such an event, the City of Phoenix demonstrated its dedication to proactive community outreach and education, empowering residents with the knowledge and skills needed to stay safe around water.
