Press release No. 112 of 20 March 2023

WIESBADEN- In 2022, roughly 239,000 young people started a qualifying programme of the transition sector between school and apprenticeship in Germany. The aim is to acquire basic vocational knowledge or to obtain a secondary general or intermediate school certificate through these programmes in order to improve the chances of securing an apprenticeship. Based on provisional results from integrated reporting on education and training, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the number of new participants in transition sector programmes increased by a good 6%, or 14,000 people, compared with 2021. The number rose for the first time since 2016. This increase is probably mainly due to young Ukrainians who have immigrated to Germany on account of the war in Ukraine and are taking part in programmes which teach the German language. The number of foreigners who started a qualifying programme of the transition sector in 2022 rose by 22%, or 14,000, to a total of 81,000 people from 2021. A breakdown by citizenship is not possible.
