Freshwater Challenge Will Safeguard Drinking Water Supplies for People, Wildlife

WASHINGTON (April 23, 2024) -- The National Wildlife Federation has signed on as an inaugural memberof the America the Beautiful Freshwater Challengeand endorses theBiden Administration's goal ofreconnecting, restoring, and protecting eight million acres of wetlands and 100,000 miles of our rivers and streams by 2030.

"Americans across the board want our waters to be healthy and clean for drinking, swimming, and fishing," said Abby Tinsley, the National Wildlife Federation's vice president for conservation policy. "Now that the Supreme Court has taken away essential Clean Water Act protections, commitments like the Freshwater Challenge and the longstanding no-net-loss policy are more important than ever. The Biden Administration has wisely zeroed in on some of the most at risk types of aquatic systems and is supporting effective, proven restoration approaches that will help ensure healthy habitat and sustainable, adequate water supplies for future generations of people and wildlife."
