Safety and quality on the agenda at first social housing summit

Every major provider of social housing in Kensington and Chelsea gathered for a Council-run summit focusing on improving conditions for residents in the borough.

The event, which was co-hosted by leader Cllr Elizabeth Campbell and Kensington and Bayswater MP Joe Powell and chaired by Baroness Jane Scott, saw the Council set out its commitments to change following the Grenfell tragedy.

The quality and safety of the 20,000 socially rented homes in Kensington and Chelsea - 13,000 of which are managed by housing associations - and how all housing providers can work more closely together was also considered.

The group has agreed to continue to meet once every quarter.

Cllr Elizabeth Campbell said:

"We have promised to learn from the Grenfell tragedy and to improve the experience of our residents who live in social housing, but we cannot fulfil that promise alone.

"Housing associations manage the majority of social homes in our borough, and we need their help to ensure that every social tenant lives in a safe, good quality home, regardless of who their landlord is.

"Everyone who attended our summit has a part to play in making things better for residents and embedding the lessons learned from Grenfell. I look forward to working more closely with government and other housing providers to make that happen."
