REV. AL SHARPTON COMMEMORATES SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF BUFFALO MASS SHOOTING THAT LEFT 10 BLACK PEOPLE DEAD

Notes Community's Resilience, Urges Continued Fight Against Acts of White Nationalism & Violent Hatred

New York, NY (May 14, 2024) - Rev. Al Sharpton, the Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), issued the following statement on the second anniversary of the mass shooting at the Tops grocery store in Buffalo that left 10 people dead. The case rose to national prominence when a teenage white nationalist targeted the Tops in a predominantly Black portion of the city, having posted a hateful rage-filled manifesto online earlier in the day. Rev. Sharpton has traveled to Buffalo several times since the shooting, delivering the eulogy for several of the victims.

"Two years have passed since the hate in one person's heart snatched away 10 souls, who had done nothing more than be Black. While that time has passed, the pain remains real not only for these families but for all Black Americans who live in fear of walking into a grocery store, get in their car, or even go for a walk. The tragedy in Buffalo was a painful reminder that hate-fueled violence has flourished on the internet and spilled into the real world.

All of us felt the pain these 10 families continue to live with these last two years. Yet our collective response should give us a beacon of hope that their untimely deaths were not in vain. Since the tragedy of May 14^th, President Biden heard the call from the National Action Network and others to hold a White House summit to combat the rise of violent hate acts against Black, Jewish, Latino, LGBTQ, and other Americans. The families have turned their grief into purpose, and they have joined this fight against all forms of hate. Our entire nation should follow their lead, their resolve, and their mission to give the victims a legacy that ensures what happened in Buffalo or Charleston or Jacksonville never happens again."
