BHSU INVITES PUBLIC TO SHOWCASE OF STUDENT CANOE CREATIONS

Several Black Hills State University students will soon be learning if their final projects "sink or swim" by testing the buoyancy of canoes they handcrafted this semester. The students constructed their canoes in the course "Skin on Frame Canoe Building" instructed by Quintin Owens, chair of the School of Arts and Humanities at BHSU.

"The course provided students with an experiential, place-based learning opportunity with goals of increasing student engagement and providing multiple ways of knowing," said Owens. "Students engaged intellectually, creatively, socially, and physically to problem solve issues of form and function. This course has strengthened students' appreciation for art, craftmanship, and history while fostering an appreciation for values that bind individuals to their natural environment."

The official testing of these handcrafted canoes will be open to the public to watch in what Owens describes as a "spectacle of buoyancy and innovation."

The testing event will be held Friday, April 26 at 10 a.m. at the pool in the Donald E. Young Center.
